Alice Musiol always develops her pieces from a direct connection to her immediate surroundings. Materials that are readily available, already present or easily accessible to her at that moment constitute the basis, her own body and her own resources determine the limit. She herself creates, sets up and transports her pieces – anything that she cannot produce or move herself will never be considered for her work.
From this material that initially appears to be unremarkable and that is present more or less by coincidence, she creates the personal and the specific. Almost all of her works share in this tension between the seemingly unimportant, arbitrary and faceless material produced en masse on the one hand and the personal and individual signature on the other, and this tension is also the meta topic of her work: At what point and how does identity arise from anonymity? At what point does the universal become specific? The mass-produced and uniform become unique?
A large collection of matches that Musiol received as a gift, for example, becomes the starting point for a whole series of works. Economical about her resources, Musiol uses all parts of the collection as material for her work. She arranges thousands of matches to form a mandala. This mandala is the result of a lengthy meditative work process and at the same time, it is a representation of and a metaphor for precisely this work process, for the thought process that led to this work in the first place. While the nature of the mandala is one of internalization and meditation, the abundance of matches offers the possibility of enormous fireworks. And as uniform as the matches may be due to their industrial production, they also appear as individual elements in the manual arrangement that opposes the imbalance and deviations of manual craft to industrial perfection. The inside of the box as well as its cover serve as base material for additional pieces, which are reminiscent of abstract ornaments on the one hand and of structures of settlements (System) and molecules (Trial and Error) on the other hand.
A whole cosmos unto itself is formed by the drawings and watercolour paintings, which through incredible sensitivity and vulnerability provoke a mood found between dream and nightmare, between memory and imagination, between dissolution and self-assertion.
The topic of abstract structure and organic individuality or identity is the common thread in Musiol’s works, be it in the combination of fingerprints or in her “abstract” Veil of Veronica, the “vera icon”. Similarly, motives from architecture (buildings and a door without windows) keep reappearing and connect elements that are mathematically constructed with elements that have grown organically.

Alice Musiol (*1971, Kattowitz) graduated from the ‘Kunstakademie Düsseldorf’ in 1999 as a ‘Meisterschülerin’ with A.R. Penck. She has received numerous awards and scholarships and has participated in many solo exhibitions as well as group exhibitions. These have been accompanied by a number of publications. In the fall of 2015, the time of the opening of the new building and extension of the Sprengel Museum Hannover, Musiol will exhibit her art in one of the new “Ten Rooms …”.
UGLY BUT PERFECT is Alice Musiol’s first solo exhibition at 401contemporary.

Ralf Haensel started 401contemporary in Berlin in March 2009, driven by two motivations; to provide young artists with rooms in which to exhibit, a ‘spatial’ platform, but also to offer them a ‘time’ platform, a possibility to discover a connectedness with other artists across the boundaries of time. This hologram of past and present not only steers young artists on their way forward, it also initiates new interpretations and provided important stimuli for all parties involved. At the end of 2010, 401contemporary moved from ‘Berlin-Mitte’ to Potsdamer Strasse, one of the most flamboyant art-creating-and-trading areas of the roaring-twenties-Berlin, and today again an epicentre of the Berlin
